How do you read 4/1 or 2/3?
These numbers are not fractions. They describe two groups of stitches that will cross. Start by counting the squares in each group.
Symbol used in this tutorial

The numbers describe two groups
4/1 means four stitches in the first group and one stitch in the second. The symbol spans five squares, so it is worked over five stitches in total.
2/3 also spans five squares, but the stitches are divided differently: two in the first group and three in the second.
L or R shows the crossing direction
L indicates a left-crossing cable, with the stitches held in front. R indicates a right-crossing cable, with the stitches held in back.

P tells you how to work a stitch

P marks a purl stitch in one of the two groups. The dot in the chart helps you locate it. In the MarGueNée key shown here, it is worked as a twisted purl stitch.
P does not change the stitch count. It specifies the stitch.
Example: 4/1 LPC
- 01Slip 4 stitches to a cable needle and hold it in front of the work.
- 02Work 1 twisted purl stitch.
- 03Knit the 4 stitches from the cable needle.
4 + 1 = 5 stitches worked in total.
Example: 2/2 LPT
- 2/2
- two groups of 2 stitches
- L
- cross to the left
- P
- purl stitch, shown by the dot
- T
- twisted stitch, shown by the loop
